| In the 1830's, a Mr. Hollenbeck (who lived near Ottawa) was traveling the unsettled territory. He named the fine grove of trees west of today's Hinckley after the squaws tending camp. The town was named Squaw's Grove. Hinckley was actually conceived in the 1870's and was renamed after the president of the Chicago and Iowa railroad, Francis Hinckley. Hinckley was the site of the first Harlem Globetrotter's game in 1927. Hinckley Elementary School includes K-8 and Hinckley-Big Rock High School includes 9-12. Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove and Kishwaukee College in Malta are within 20 miles from Hinckley. Hospitals near Hinckley are Valley West Community Hospital of Sandwich, Kishwaukee Community Hospital of DeKalb and Vencor Hospital of Sycamore. Traveling is made simple with having the Amtrak Station in Plano only 11 miles away. Hinckley boasts 3 parks for rest and relaxation; Pioneer Park, Garfield Park and Streamside Park.
