According to early records, Leland was originally planned by Christopher Fuerborn in 1837. Shortly after arriving, he planned to to make Leland a central point for a market for southern DeKalb and northern LaSalle counties. Hospitals and medical centers near Leland include; Valley West Hospital in Sandwich, Community Hospital of Ottawa, Mendota Community Hospital and Kishwaukee Community Hospital in Dekalb. Leland's schools offer grades K-12 and boasts a new library.  Colleges near Leland are Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Kishwaukee College in Malta, Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove and Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby.
