Education
The schools of Plano School District #88 are the pride of the community, with up-to-date facilities and a caring professional staff. The youngest students attend P.H. Miller School, where an Early Childhood program lays the foundation for educational success. Kindergartners, first and second graders continue to master the basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics. As they go on to Centennial School for third through fifth grades, students sharpen their basic skills and begin to explore the wonders of technology.
New challenges await at Plano Middle School, both in and out of the classroom, with opportunities in industrial education, band, chorus and athletics.
District #88 students benefit from the vast resources of the elite Illinois Math and Science Academy, located in nearby Aurora, and Plano High School students can get a head start on the future through cooperative programs with Waubonsee Community College and Indian Valley Vocational Center. High School students interested in the performing arts have a variety of outlets for their talents, from the Madrigal Christmas Dinner to the student-directed one-act plays. Working with the Fox Valley Players, they offer six theatrical productions each year. With activities as diverse as scholastic bowl, jazz band, and clubs for art and ecology, over half the students participate in extra-curricular activities. At Plano High, “Reaper Spirit” is alive and well!
The community supports the schools through the Plano Education Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that raises funds to enhance technology, fine arts and other education goals of the district. The schools’ efforts are also supported by the excellent Plano Community Library, which recently completed a 25,000 sq. ft. building addition. The expanded facility will house their vast collection of books, reference materials, videos and compact discs, as well as a comprehensive local history education filled with memorabilia related to the community.
Waubonsee Community College has approved the location of a new extension campus on a nine-acre site adjacent to the Lakewood Springs development on Route 34. This will provide great access to college education for citizens in Plano and the surrounding communities. The new campus will offer a range of programs covering basic education, transfer programs for those pursuing bachelor’s degrees, business and industry training programs and community enrichment courses.
