| Sandwich was named by John Wentworth. Originally the settlement 60 miles southwest of Chicago was known as Newark Station. John Wentworth, a U.S. Congressman, was told by local townspeople that he could rename the town if he could get the railroad to stop there and could get a permanent post office established. After establishing railroad stops and a post office, he named Sandwich, Illinois after his hometown Sandwich, New Hampshire. By 1876, Sandwich was well-represented in a variety of trades and professions by the 2 major manufacturers, over 68 businessman, 10 professionals and 2 newspapers. Sandwich is located in Northern Illinois and is home to 6607 residents. Sandwich is proud to be the home of the Sandwich Fair. The Sandwich Fair is the oldest continuing county fair in Illinois, having been held every year since 1889. Sandwich has been nicknamed "a fair city" for the Sandwich Fair being held there. Valley West Community Hospital is Sandwich's recently expanded and remodeled hospital. Sandwich has approximately 16 churches of just about every denomination. Sandwich has 3 elementary schools, a junior high school and a high school. Edgebrook Golf Club is an 18 hole golf course located in Sandwich. The Opera House of Sandwich offers room rentals, a gift store and a variety of performances. The Sandwich Park District provides recreational programs, facilities and open space which are designed to provide enjoyable leisure time experiences. Sandwich boasts a new YMCA which also offers a variety of activities and programs. Mallard Bend Campground and RV Park is near Sandwich, along with several other parks and recreational areas within just 30 minutes. Sandwich has remained a pleasant town, rich with tradition, with numerous opportunities. The city of Sandwich has continued to grow and expand to meet the needs of the community. |
