Somonauk's first habitation built was infact the first in the County erected. It was a small log cabin ,built in the Spring of 1834, on the bank of Somonauk Creek. The log cabin was first used as a station house on the mail route between Chicago and Galena, by way of John Dixon's ferry. The house was abandoned in the Fall, was used in the Winter by a Robinson and became a tavern owned by James Root. In 1839, Somonauk had about 30 houses in the township. The Village of Somonauk was incorporated in 1866. Somonauk is located an equal distance from Aurora, DeKalb and Ottawa on the Route 34 corrider, with easy access to a variety of major state interstate roads. One can travel quickly and easily to Chicago's O'Hare Airport, Rockford or Wisconsin. Somonauk has approximately 11 churches. Somonauk's Marie Louise Olmstead Memorial Museum is located in the downtown area. Located within the Village of Somonauk is a Senior Citizen retirement center, and 2 nursing homes nearby. The new library is set to open in July. I will include photos once it is open. Recreation facilities are abundant in Somonauk including Somonauk Community Park and DeKalb County Forest Preserve. Somonauk Community Park is an 11 acre multi-use park and DeKalb County Forest Preserve offers camping, swimming, and an 18-hole golf course. Also near Somonauk is Starved Rock State Park, Shabbona State Park, Illinois River Waterways and several private airports. Somonauk's unique location has made it attractive to people with residential as well as commercial interests.
