| Earl Adams built the first log cabin in 1833 on the hill, now graced by the former Kendall County Courthouse. Adams sold his cabin a year later to Lyman and Burr Bristol, who also owned property on the north side of the river where they laid out the original village of Bristol. In 1835, the Bristol brothers sold their claim on the south side of the river to 2 cousins originally from New York, Rulief Duryea and James Cornell. The following year, Duryea laid out the village of Yorkville. Yorkville is nestled alongside the Fox River just 45 miles west and a bit south of Chicago. The downtown portion of Yorkville is located around the corner of Rt. 47 and Van Emmon Road. Yorkville's major intersections are located at Rt. 47 and Rt. 34; Rt. 34 and Rt. 126; Rt. 47 and Rt. 30 and Rt. 47 and Rt. 71. From the center of Yorkville, major interstates I-88 AND I-80 are just a few miles down the respective directions of Rt. 47. Yorkville was recently awarded the First Place Governor's Hometown award from the state of Illinois. Some of Yorkville's schools are, Parkview Christian Academy (formerly Yorkville Grade School) for K-8; Bristol Grade School for grades 1-3; Circle Center Intermediate School for 4&5; Yorkville Middle School for 6-8 and Yorkville High School for 9-12. Yorkville offers several churches of numerous denominations. Countryside Theatre is Yorkville's movie theatre. Yorkville's parks are Riverfront Park, Beecher Community Park and Hide a Way Lakes. Yorkville's Hide a Way Lakes offers horseback riding, swimming, fishing and hiking. Summer fun in Yorkville include Music Under the Stars, Farmers Market, Annual Promenade of the Arts in the Riverfront Park, Annual Hometown Days Festival in Beecher Community Park and Rolling on the River, an Illinois River ride for the environment.
